Aim: To practice how to behave in the library.
Students will be given their assigned library seats. Handout + review Library Book contract Practice library book voices As a class - teach parts of the library Students will get a paper telling them where to go in the library (this will help to reinforce where sections are located and to prepare them for their mapping assignment for next week). Students will be instructed to go there quietly and when they get there, they will be told to use a library book voice. They will look at their paper and move quietly to the next section and repeat two more times. The fourth time will be for them to go quietly to the storybook area, where we will discuss their behavior and read library lion. |

3.3 Dewey Intro
Motivational Sorting Game:
Place a variety of books on the tables. Have students work in groups quietly. Their 2 minute task is to "organize" the books on the table using any method they choose (fiction/non, animals, color, size, etc.). Have them discuss findings. Have them imagine if their system would work if they had 10,000 books and if they would be able to find their book. Start to explore the DDC's non-fiction areas. Point and locate these areas. Explain that it is divided by hundreds. Have students arrange 100, 200, 300 - 900 signs around the library according to the library signage. Explain where the signage is located. Provide the IFC handout. Assign each table a hundreds number and have them explore that area and write down the types of books that are located there |
3.4 Ahoy Matey! Dewey Treasure Hunt
Students will start to learn about the Dewey Decimal System.
1. Explain goal: To learn how our library is organized. 2. Show students a Dewey PPT 2. Hand out Dewey Topics Sheet (list major areas) and explain how to use it. 3. Explain that we match up the subjects of our books with a number |

describes the system's categories and what topics can be found in each category. Each student should receive his or her own reference sheet of categories.
4. T library media specialist describes the system's categories and what topics can be found in each category. Each student should receive his or her own reference sheet of categories.
-The library media specialist divides the class into teams of four or five students and gives each team a paper coin with the topic of a book written on it.
Each team consults the reference sheet and decides in which of the ten major categories they expect to find the topic (300s, 700s, etc.) and tells the library media specialist.
After confirming that the category is correct, the library media specialist instructs the team to locate a specific book on that topic and to return with it. If the team locates a correct book, they put the coin into a treasure chest (small box, etc) then start again with a new topic.
The goal is to fill the treasure chest with five coins. Once the teams have finished, the library media specialist leads a discussion on the benefits of a standardized system (i.e. being able to easily locate items, to find similar items together, to locate items in different libraries, etc.).
